Hace cinco meses participe en una conferencia en los Emiratos Árabes y el tema en discusión era el trafico de mujeres y niños. Ahí hablamos sobre la explotación de niños, y de como,en muchos países, ellos son forzados a trabajar bajo terribles condiciones. Una trabajadora social nos hablo de como en Arabia Saudita, ella visito lugares en los que se veían niños mendigos,sin piernas, sin manos, ciegos, o con alguna otra deficiencia. En su relato, esta trabajadora social nos contaba que estas heridas o lesiones, muchas veces eran causadas a propósito,para así llamar aun mas la atención de la gente. En conclusión—regalar dinero a estos niños mendigos puede muy bien reforzar ese comportamiento criminal y empeorar la situación, puesto que ayuda a que se mantenga un ciclo de violencia.
Hace un par de días vía dos niños en la calle frente a un centro comercial aquí en Niteroi. Al solo verlos, mi mente se transporto a esa sala donde esa trabajadora social hablaba del tema. Solo que esta vez, no era un cuento sino la realidad frente a mis propios ojos. Ningún niño debería estar trabajando, no importa el nivel de pobreza ni la situación social. El gobierno tiene la responsabilidad de asegurarse que estos niños estén donde tienen que estar: en el colegio, estudiando para tener una esperanza de un futuro mejor. Me causo tristeza verlos. Tocaban lindísimo la flauta. Pero a la vez, yo se que existe una gran probabilidad de que estos niños hayan sido forzados a hacer esto como trabajo, por sus mismos familiares o quien sabe, hasta por traficantes de niños. No pude, por lealtad a mi conciencia, darle dinero a estos pequeños artistas. Mas bien me siento obligada a hablar sobre el tema y esperar que la gente comprenda que a veces, pensamos que podemos ayudar y mas bien estamos haciendo un gran daño . Por favor, si ven niños mendigando--piensen bien si su contribución les ayuda o los esclaviza
Belo texto Lucy , conheço os meninos , já os vi tocando flauta mais realmente compactuo com vc e jamais dou dinheiro a qualquer pessoa em rua , se me pedir comida eu dou , mais dinheiro não costumo dar não , em trabalho com meninos de rua durante anos de minha vida vi relatos de maus tratos devido a este tipo de trabalho , e que acaba fazendo com que estes menores fiquem na rua devinitivamente . Não levam dinheiro para casa são espancados , ficam na rua o dinheiro é só deles , não existe exploração , assim se formam estes grupos de rua , bjs !!!
ReplyDeleteSo that first paragraph makes me think of 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Have you seen it? I have yet to see anything like that in Honduras. I would guess these kids are stationed in big cities (this way they can generate more money) and I am in a small rural town so that somewhat explains my oblivion... Did the social worker offer possible solutions to this problem? I know this is a huge issue, but what are the ways to prevent this God aweful practice?
ReplyDeleteDearest Margaux, Yes it reminded me of that film as well, I think it does a perfect job of depicting just how bad the situation is. Well what we are noticing here is that the children are collected from these very rural towns and trafficked to the big cities. Take a closer look at how the children move about there in the small towns especially in low-income areas, you may notice that those exact places is where the trafficking begins. Well the solution comes from taking multiple steps to attack the problem, first of which is education. What you are doing now in Honduras, starting educational programs, that is THE best form of prevention because it keeps children off the streets and away from traffickers. Another thing is the people have to put more pressure on government to increase punishment for trafficking, especially for those who are caught PLANNING to execute a trafficking operation. Again, tackling the problem at the root, not merely dealing with the symptoms--is the best solution. One thing that everyone can do is when you see these children, DO NOT give them money. Give them food if you can tell they are famished. But do not give them money, else you will be contributing to this vicious cycle. Also contacting authorities to report these children who are begging in this manner is something that I would like to see more.
